Further Elements 2024 - Follow the Race

Scotland in late October - not the first place that would come to mind for an epic ultra distance race, given the likelihood of brutal conditions, unridable terrain and remote landscapes. That's all on purpose when it comes to Further Elements, the Scottish edition of the Further race series organised by Camille Mcmillan.

This year's event takes on a different form to last year's race, where riders will head out westwards into the Highlands instead of the Cairngorms. Whilst technical offroad sections remain, There will be more road segments on this years route, which blurs the line between taking a gravel bike or more offroad capable mountain bike. There's also an all important ferry crossing, which riders will have to make at the 300km mark. If they miss the ferry they'll face a difficult choice: wait until the next one (the next morning), or ride the 60km long way round?

DOTS TO WATCH

Josh Reid

Restrap rider Josh Reid comes to Further for the first time, after a big year on the bike taking on a huge amounts of races and miles throughout the year. The Land Between, Kenyan Migration Gravel Race, Trakka, Pan Celtic Race, Dales Divide... the list goes on. As something of a season closer, Josh will be looking to lead the charge at the front of the race and will be a dot to keep an eye on.

Josh is using a lightweight yet packed out setup, mixing a Saddle Pack and Race Bar Bag with a pair of Downtube Bags mounted to the forks to squeeze in the extra layers needed for the potentially tough conditions.

Unfortunately we were also hoping to have Kerry Macphee along for this event, following on from her amazing debut season in ultra endurance racing (winning both HT550 and Land Between). Kerry was ready to roll but the stormy weather has left her stranded in the Outer Hebridies.
